HMD and POSCO, Korea’s leading steel maker signed a joint agreement for the development of LNG containment tanks and technology for ships on December 31.
Under the agreement, the two companies will carry out joint researches on areas including improving LNG containment tank models, ways to commercialize 9% nickel steel for ships, capability assessment for LNG containment made of 9% nickel steel, and verifying and commercializing swash bulkheads.
The joint researches will help HMD to enhance trustworthiness of the quality of ships it builds by securing proprietary technology for building LNG containment tank made of 9% nickel steel and data on structural experiment for shipbuilding.
Moreover, in an effort to meet IMO’s IGC CODE, the two companies also have been working on developing LNG carriers with cryogenic containment tanks made of high manganese steel that is understood to have higher strength and improved economic feasibility since July 2016.
