After 45 days elongation work at Hyundai-Vinashin Shipyard (HVS), Vietnam, the PCTC Mignon has been redelivered to Wallenius Lines AB with an increased loading capacity of 7,352 units on May 3, 2005.

Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, Ulsan, Korea, a global leading shipyard in medium range Product Carriers and Containerships, had signed the elongation contract for five PCTCs with Wallenius Lines AB, Sweden in September 17, 2004, agreeing the work would be carried out at its joint-venture shipyard, HVS in Vietnam as a sub-contractor.

Mignon, the first vessel among five of Wallenius Lines’ PCTCs, was elongated by 28.8 meters to 227.9 meters long from 199.1 meters and the loading capacity was increased by 20 % (1,227 units) to 7,352 units from 6,125 units. The second vessel, Elektra, is scheduled to arrive at HVS around June 1 for the same elongation work. The remaining three, Boheme, Manon and Undine will be elongated in 2005 as well with 40 working days shorter than that of Mignon. The last vessel, Undine, is scheduled to arrive around December 4, 2005 and will be delivered again to Wallenius around January 13, 2006.

HVS was established in 1996 as a joint-venture shipyard, with ship-repair and conversion as her main business, between Hyundai Mipo and Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin).

Currently about 70 Korean managers and engineers of Hyundai Mipo are working at HVS. Especially HMD has supported HVS by dispatching the rich experienced project manager for this Wallenius Lines’s PCTCs elongation work.

HVS has a performance record of ship-repair more than 550 various types of vessel including the upgrading offshore units since its operation in April 1999. It’s annual ship repair capacity is more than 100 vessels.

A successful conversion work for Mignon is expected to bring new inquiries for similar works to HVS from all over the world.

Meanwhile, HMD completed its transformation into a shipbuilding yard in March 2005 since it started new building business in 1996. HMD is devolving its ship- repair and conversion business to Hyundai-Vinashin Shipyard with its accumulated know-how and experience from 30 years’ repair and conversion business.
